Class 8 Sales Jump 43% in December to Cap Strong 2017

U.S. Class 8 retail sales in December rose 43% from a year earlier, clearing 22,000 while posting the highest volume in 2½ years, reported.

Sales hit 22,355 compared with 15,629 a year earlier, according to Ward’s. December’s volume was the highest since July 2015, when the total was 23,383.

All truck makers but one, Volvo Trucks North America, posted gains in December. VTNA fell 16.1% year-over-year. VTNA is a unit of Volvo Group.

Market leader Freightliner, a brand of Daimler Trucks North America, soared 94.4% in December. For the full year, sales reached 192,252 units, down just 0.2% from the 2016-period total of 192,664.

Market shares for the full year compared with 2016 were essentially the same for each truck maker — except for Peterbilt Motors Co., which increased its share 2.1 percentage points to 15.9%, while VTNA saw its share slip to 8.9% from 10.7%. Peterbilt is a unit of Paccar Inc.
