Delphi Wants More Time for Exit Plan

Dow Jones

NEW YORK -- A lawyer for Delphi Corp. on Wednesday said the company intends to request more time to develop a bankruptcy reorganization plan, although he said the company still expects to exit bankruptcy by the middle of 2007.

The attorney, Jack Butler, said the Troy, Mich.-based auto-parts company is making "robust" progress in its talks with its biggest customer, General Motors Corp., and with its labor unions and investors on a deal that could form the basis of an exit plan. Still, he said, Delphi will file a request with the U.S. Bankruptcy Court on Dec. 22 to extend the deadline for developing a Chapter 11 reorganization plan.

Butler, who spoke to reporters after a meeting with U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Robert Drain, declined to say why Delphi needed more time.

Delphi, which has been in bankruptcy since October 2005, faces a Feb. 1 deadline to submit its Chapter 11 plan to the court.
