Heavy Duty Dialogue ‘09 DVD’s Now Available for Purchase!

Over 20 of the industry’s most influential senior executives were in one place, on one stage, discussing the transition of the commercial vehicle industry and the challenges it faces. Over 220 senior executives attended HDMA’s Heavy Duty Dialogue in 2009.
HD Dialogue is considered to be the premier business conference of the year in the commercial vehicle supplier industry. The exceptional content of this year’s program was provided through the guidance of the HDMA board of directors and its executive committee, who planned the content for the program.

Heavy Duty Dialogue ’09 DVD Topics and Segments:

The commercial vehicle industry is in a state of transition. The future, both short and long term, is promising to be complex with new and challenging business conditions. Vital topics for the Heavy Duty Dialogue ’09 include an industry forecast to define the near and long term future for the industry, US energy policy, our economic and environmental sustainability, and a “developing storm” of a generationally diverse workforce.

DVD 1:
Opening comments were provided by MEMA and HDMA executives on the state of the association and general comments on the industry and program. Gary Dilts, Executive Vice President and General Manager of JD Power and Associates presented the  organization’s Founders Award to PACCAR.

Tom Plimpton, Vice Chairman of Paccar Inc provided the opening address with his views on the trends driving one of the industry’s most successful truck manufacturers. Q&A was be moderated by Newport Communications Group Publisher and Vice President, Kate Miller.

DVD 2:
An Economic assessment was presented by the senior economist and economic advisor from the US Federal Reserve’s Chicago office, William “Bill” Strauss. This session analyzed the current state of the U.S. economy and the performance of the overall macro economy and industrial sectors. Q&A was moderated by Lazard Asset Management Senior Vice President, Peter Nesvold

A panel of four industry-leading CEO’s discussed drivers of the strategic direction they are taking their companies and why:

  • ArvinMeritor chairman and CEO Charles “Chip” McClure
  • Mack Truck president and CEO Dennis “Denny” Slagle
  • Marmon Highway Technologies Companies President, Kelly Dier

A round-table discussion with the panel participants was moderated by president of MacKay and Co., Stu MacKay, and included questions from the audience.

DVD 3
The President of Shell Oil Products US, David Sexton provided an overview of a proposed energy policy, the global energy challenge and how the current economic environment is affecting short- and long-term energy supply and demand. He outlined key priorities for national and global policies that balance accessibility, affordability and acceptability of energy. Q&A was moderated by Randall Reilly’s VP of Editorial, Linda Longton.

The Industry’s View on Government Affairs, the panel moderated by Transport Topics Publisher and Editor in Chief, Howard Abrahamson, included a presentation from Tim Lynch, Vice President, ATA and Ann Wilson, Senior VP of Government Affairs for MEMA discussed a range of issues. They included the re-authorization of the Highway Bill, “Card-Check” legislation, emissions and fuel economy regulations, highway congestion and more.

DVD 4
Penton Media’s Fleet Owner Magazine Editor in Chief, Jim Mele moderated a panel discussion on markets for diesel engines, commercial vehicles, military wheeled vehicles and the raw materials market, with panelists:

  • Power Systems Research President and CEO George Zirnhelt
  • Longbow Consulting Senior Research Analyst, Eli Lustgarten
  • Original Equipment Suppliers Association Vice President, Industry Analysis and Economics Dave Andrea

The panel included a unique approach to a market forecast with the focus on a range of indicators.

KCG Direct LLC Principal Ken Gronbach, noted author, futurist and demographer, provided a recap of research included in his book “The Coming Demographic Storm”. An outstanding presenter, Mr. Gronbach drilled-down in to the game changing realities of rapidly shifting demographic trends and the effect it will have on industry and our society.
