Anti-dumping Duty on Chinese Tire, Steel, Others

NEW DELHI: Concerned over surge in imports particularly from China, India has slapped anti-dumping duty on several stainless steel products and radial tires.

The anti-dumping duty is a WTO compatible remedy available to protect domestic industry against cheap imports. The Central Board of Excise and Customs has imposed anti-dumping duty of up to $2254.7 per tonne on steel products — used mainly for making durables like refrigerators and also in automobile and kitchenware industries. The tire makers seemed pleased with the dumping duty of up to $99 per a set of bus and truck radial tires (including tubeless) from China and Thailand, while the vehicles makers opposed the move saying it is "detrimental to the industry that is trying to come out of recession".

Lack of Growth in Domestic Truck Markets will Switch Focus to Exports

THE established “triad OEMs” (manufacturers in the United States, Europe, and Japan) have pursued emerging markets to compensate for the lack of growth in domestic markets. And according to Jurgen Reers, managing partner of North America for Roland Berger Strategy Consultants, they will even more aggressively pursue them in the next five years.

In Roland Berger’s presentation titled “The Global Commercial Vehicle Industry 2020 — A Strategic Assessment,” during HDMA’s HD Dialogue Conference in Las Vegas, Reers said that the triad OEMs received 70 percent of their revenue from the home region and 30 percent from abroad in 2008, but it will be a 50-50 split by 2010. That's because significant growth is expected over the next five years in China (8.25 percent), India (7.58 percent), Russia, and Brazil (both 3.9 percent).
