MILAN - Fiat's Iveco unit plans to cut about 1,000 jobs at a plant in Spain to reduce costs in the face of a severe sales slump, a spokesman for the truck division said on Sunday.

Iveco will cut the jobs at a plant in Madrid, one of three it has in the country, he said.

Plant chief Piero Bordesan was quoted in Italian business daily Il Sole 24 Ore on Sunday as saying that the number of jobs to be cut was less than half of the roughly 2,800 workers at the plant, which makes trucks for transport and construction.

After Axing 28,000, Brazilian Parts Suppliers Eye Exports for Growth

Brazilian auto parts makers are eyeing boosting exports again after focusing on strong domestic demand.

First quarter sales to Argentina, the main destination for the Brazilian components, fell 42 percent year on year to US$340m. Exports to the US were down 52 percent and German exports off 46 percent.

But the domestic market - both automakers and aftermarket - has now fallen and parts makers have axed 28,000 workers since the final quarter of 2008.

Scania Profit Slumps 93 Percent, Sees No Near-Term Recovery

Orders tumble, with Central and Eastern Europe hardest hit

LONDON (MarketWatch) -- Swedish truck maker Scania on Monday reported a 93 percent slump in its first-quarter net profit and said it doesn't expect any improvement in demand in the coming quarters as practically all its markets were hit by the economic downturn.

The group said profit in the quarter tumbled to 179 million Swedish kronor ($21.8 million) from 2.51 billion kronor a year earlier. The result was below the consensus forecast of 201 million kronor, according to a Dow Jones Newswires survey.

Europe Truck Sales Fall 32.9 Percent in March

European new commercial vehicle registrations fell 35.6 percent in the first quarter as a whole, as the economic downturn pummeled demand, industry association ACEA said on Friday.

  • Commercial vehicle registrations plunge 35.6 percent in Q1
  • March drop steeper in new EU member states
  • 451,137 vehicles registered in Q1

March had three more working days this year than in 2008, ACEA said, but demand for commercial vehicles, which reflects the state of the wider economy, fell 32.9 percent across Europe, including the 27 EU member states plus the European Free Trade Association countries, but not Malta and Cyprus.
