Class 3-7 Truck Sales Grow 24 Percent Y/Y to 240,356 Units

Despite the drop in consumer confidence and less-than-glowing economic reports in September, sales of medium-duty trucks continued to grow at a steady pace.

Truck makers reported selling 240,356 new medium-duty (Classes 3-7) trucks through September, 24 percent more than over the same time last year, according to figures released Thursday from WardsAuto.com.

Meritor WABCO Forms Strategic Alliance with Takata for Safety Systems

Meritor WABCO Vehicle Control Systems and Takata Corp.’s U.S. subsidiary, TK Holdings, Inc., have signed a letter of intent to establish a strategic alliance in which the companies will work together to develop new active safety systems products for North American commercial vehicles.

The alliance was announced at the American Trucking Associations Management Conference & Exhibition.

CARB Diesel Particulate Matter Filter Retrofit Deadline Looms

The deadline for meeting California's Truck and Bus regulation diesel particulate filter retrofit requirement is January 1, 2012, but fleets can still apply for staggered implementation schedule or flexible phase-in option.

The Air Resources Board is reminding owners of heavier diesel trucks that they need to act now in order to comply with California's Truck and Bus regulation, which has its first diesel filter deadlines in January 2012.

Obama Signs Free-Trade Pacts

President Obama on Friday signed the nation's largest free-trade agreement since NAFTA — and the first of his administration — with South Korea, Colombia and Panama.

"These trade agreements will significantly boost American exports, support tens of thousands of American jobs and protect labor rights, the environment and intellectual property," the White House said in a statement.

The economy topped the list of critical issues facing the trucking industry for the third consecutive year, the American Transportation Research Institute said.

The group’s annual survey, released here Oct. 17 during American Trucking Associations’ Management Conference & Exhibition, found the hours-of-service rule was the second-biggest concern, followed by the shortage of qualified truck drivers.

Heavy equipment maker Caterpillar Inc. said Monday its third-quarter profit jumped on higher sales.

Net income was $1.14 billion, or $1.71 per share, up from $792 million, or $1.22, a year ago.

DOT Secretary LaHood Asks Senator Ayotte Not to Move Against Hours of Service Rule

Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood is urging Sen. Kelly Ayotte (R-NH) not to proceed with her amendment to block the rewrite of the hours of service rule. In a letter yesterday, LaHood defended the work of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration in drafting the revised rule.

"Last year, nearly 4,000 people died in crashed involving large trucks and, by our estimates, approximately 500 of those deaths involved an overly tired commercial driver," LaHood wrote.

ATA Renews President Bill Graves’ Contract

Transport Topics Magazine American Trucking Associations said it has reached an agreement on a new three-year contract with ATA President Bill Graves.

After serving two terms as governor of Kansas, Graves took the helm of ATA in 2003.
