STEMCO ACQUIRES ROME TOOL & DIE

LONGVIEW, TEXAS - STEMCO, an EnPro Industries company announced that it has acquired Rome Tool and Die Company, a privately-held company with fifty-five years experience in the design and manufacture of high quality brake shoes for medium and heavy duty truck and bus applications. The business will become part of the brake products group of STEMCO. The acquisition was completed for cash; terms were not disclosed.

DEF Dispensers to Be Installed at 50 TravelCenters Truck Stops

TravelCenters of America said that it will install diesel exhaust fluid dispensers at fuel islands of 50 of its truck stops during 2011.

DEF is the fluid composed of urea and water that is needed to run the selective catalytic reduction systems on most new trucks built to comply with 2010 federal emissions standards.

The 50 sites will have dedicated DEF dispensers at the fueling islands where diesel is dispensed, while large aboveground DEF storage tanks will be installed away from the fuel islands, the company said in a Dec. 29 statement.

Truck OEMs Moving Toward Building New Breed of "Low-Cost"Models

At HDMA's Heavy Duty Dialogue meeting today in Las Vegas, research firm Frost & Sullivan unveiled a detailed analysis of what it calls the "low cost truck"movement. The research firm describes this as a strategic initiative by truck manufacturers either individually or through joint ventures that will completely reshape the types of commercial vehicles used around the world.

"What we're seeing is a determined effort to build trucks that cost 20 percent to 25 percent less in any given global market - from North America to Brazil, Russia, and Europe,"Sandeep Kar, global program manager--commercial vehicle research for Frost & Sullivan, told Fleet Owner. "And this effort will cover the entire commercial vehicle spectrum, from light- to medium- and heavy-duty models."

Alcoa Posts 4Q Profit as Sales Jump

DENVER -- Alcoa Inc. said Monday its fourth-quarter earnings jumped on higher sales to a range of businesses, from aerospace to commercial construction.

It was the third consecutive quarterly profit for the aluminum manufacturing giant, which appears to have turned the corner after recording losses in 2008 and 2009 because of the recession. The company expects business to continue to improve, forecasting a 12 percent increase in global aluminum demand this year.

Motor Vehicle Parts Manufacturers Name Industry Champion Award Recipients; Former White House Chief of Staff Andrew Card to Address Legislative Summit

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Bob McKenna, president and CEO of the Motor & Equipment Manufacturers Association (MEMA), announced today that Sen. Debbie Stabenow (D-Mich.) and Rep. Geoff Davis (R-Ky.) were chosen as this year's recipients of the Joseph M. Magliochetti Industry Champion Award, a special recognition given to elected officials who have shown outstanding leadership on behalf of motor vehicle parts manufacturers.

The Industry Champion Award is given each year in the memory of Joseph M. Magliochetti, a former MEMA chairman who also served as the chairman and CEO of Dana Corp. until his death in 2003.

NHTSA to Weigh Speed Limiters and Proceed on Trucking's 68-MPH Request

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said it will abide by trucking industry requests and formally consider a proposed rule to require manufacturers to install devices to limit heavy trucks to 68 miles per hour, possibly as soon as 2012.

In a Federal Register posting last week, NHTSA said it was granting two similar petitions by American Trucking Associations, Road Safe America and nine motor carriers requesting the rule as a way to reduce speed-related crashes involving trucks.

Chamber of Commerce: U.S. economy to grow 3.2 Percent in 2011

The economy is on track to grow 3.2 percent this year and create 2.4M-2.6M net new jobs, said Thomas Donohue, the head of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, according to prepared remarks provided by the organization.
