Truck freight rose 10.5 percent in December, the fastest pace in 13 years, as surges in manufacturing and inventory restocking propelled American Trucking Associations’ tonnage index to a record high.

The seasonally adjusted index reached 124.5, the trade group reported on Jan. 24, achieving the greatest year-over-year percentage growth since July 1998 and pushing the index above the previous high mark of 121.6 in January 2005.

Navistar Faces Fines From EPA if Engines Do Not Meet Rule

Transport Topics Magazine
The Environmental Protection Agency said it would impose a penalty of at least $1,900 per engine against Navistar Inc., beginning as soon as late February, if it produces heavy-duty truck engines that don’t comply with the agency’s 2010 emissions regulations.

Agency officials said last week the reason for the penalty, implemented in an unprecedented emergency rule, is that the federal credits Navistar has used to comply with the 2010 emissions standards are projected to run out by the end of February.

Regulations Rile Heavy-Duty Manufacturers

Transport Topics Magazine
LAS VEGAS — Manufacturers of truck components and parts meeting here bristled at the Obama administration’s regulatory policies, calling them onerous and difficult to comply with, while the president of American Trucking Associations said his industry probably will not get what it craves most this year, a new, comprehensive federal transportation plan.

Key issues for the manufacturers include labor regulations, reporting on imports of minerals and uncertainty on taxes. As for the multiyear highway plan, ATA’s Bill Graves said the usefulness of continued extensions of the plan that expired in 2009 is breaking down because the balance between funding and spending is crumbling.

U.S. Trucking to Surge Into 2013, Experts Worry About Europe

Transport Topics Magazine
LAS VEGAS — Domestic trucking should continue to benefit from a decent economy this year and into 2013, and truck makers are looking at steady global economies — with the crucial exception of Europe, economists and analysts said here at a heavy-duty industry meeting.

The extent of Europe’s economic damage — and how far it will spread — was the greatest uncertainty discussed at Heavy-Duty Dialogue on Jan. 23. While no one mentioned a return to recession in the United States as being likely soon, they did list concerns including: unemployment at or above 8 percent because economic growth will stay below 3 percent; a gridlocked political system that probably will not fix federal finances; and peculiarities in manufacturing that allow it to generate large amounts of revenue and profits while employing ever fewer people.

It's Truly a Global Marketplace

Fleet Equipment Magazine
U.S. trucks may look different from the vehicles that operate in other parts of the world, but underneath there are many similarities, and they are increasing. The vehicles in our industry are part of an ever-expanding global market. Every truck maker in this country has a presence in the world market and shares successful vehicle technologies across its product lines and markets.

Take Daimler, for instance: It develops and produces vehicles in a global network under the brands Mercedes-Benz, Freightliner, Western Star and Fuso. The division’s 28 production facilities are in the NAFTA region (11 in the U.S. and three in Mexico), Asia (five), Europe (seven), South America (one) and Africa (one). In Brazil, Daimler Trucks will expand its production network in 2012 with the addition of a plant in Juiz de Fora, where heavy-duty Mercedes-Benz Actros trucks, as well as medium-duty Mercedes-Benz Accelo trucks, will be produced for Latin American markets.
