Caterpillar is not recalling 590,000 on-highway and off-road diesel engines, as reported previously. In fact, the number of engines actually recalled is just 925. The company will, however, pay a $2.55 million penalty to resolve alleged Clean Air Act violations for shipping some 590,000 engines without the correct emissions controls.
Caterpillar allegedly failed to comply with emission control reporting and engine-labeling requirements.

Preliminary data just released by FTR Associates shows July Class 8 truck total net orders for all major North American OEM's at 18,532, the lowest monthly total since September of 2010.
July was the third consecutive month with declining order numbers showing a 12 percent drop off from June. However July 2011 orders were up 63 percent from July 2010 and annualized Class 8 net orders for the past three months, while less than the previous three-month period, still total a healthy 250,400 units.

Navistar Inc. said that it will permanently close its heavy-duty truck manufacturing plant in Chatham, Ontario, which has been mothballed for two years because of a labor dispute.
The Chatham plant employed about 1,000 workers before the recession hit in late 2008, making mostly the International ProStar — the company’s main over-the-road tractor (12-15-08, p. 7).

Shortly after passing the debt limit legislation, Members of the House and the Senate returned to their districts and states for August work periods. With both chambers returning to Washington in early September, the interim period provides an excellent opportunity for AASA, HDMA, MERA and OESA members to meet with their elected officials in support of policies that will strengthen manufacturing and create jobs.
As manufacturers, educating your elected officials on the contributions of motor vehicle parts manufacturers – providing valuable jobs, ensuring vehicle safety, and developing cleaner and more fuel efficient vehicles – is essential. Congress will return after Labor Day to a crowded agenda. The degree to which they receive communication from motor vehicle suppliers will determine the ultimate success of MEMA's legislative priorities. Members should encourage lawmakers to:

President Obama will announce new fuel economy standards for heavy-duty trucks at Virginia-based Interstate Moving Services Aug. 9. The standards will affect work trucks, buses and other heavy-duty vehicles.
According to the press statement released yesterday by the Office of the Press Secretary, “The new standards will provide American businesses, who operate and own these commercial vehicles, tens of billions of dollars in fuel savings, and will dramatically reduce oil consumption and cut pollution.” No other details were made available.
