ACT: Traffic Jam Builds for Class 8 Production

Class 8 net orders for the North American markets totaled 28,900 units in March, almost 4,800 units over February – pushing the Class 8 production backlog up to almost 108,000 units by month’s end, according to data tracked by ACT Research Co.

That backlog is almost 150 percent above the same time last year, reaching a level not seen since December 2006, noted Frank Maly, ACT’s director of CV transportation analysis and research at ACT.

Navistar Engine Parts Unit PurePower to Recall and Add Workers

Navistar International's engine components business, PurePower Technologies will recall 150 workers at its foundry in Indianapolis by June 2011. The company also plans to hire 100 additional workers at the facility by 2014.

Columbia, South Carolina-based PurePower Technologies produces diesel power systems, emissions control systems and industrial metal castings. The company has a research and development centre in Columbia, a manufacturing plant in Blythewood, South Carolina, and metal castings foundries in Waukesha, Wisconsin, and Indianapolis.

The number of small and midsize manufacturing executives expecting revenue increases in 2011 has doubled over the past six months, according to survey results released April 21 by Prime Advantage.

While small and midsize manufacturers appear more optimistic, they also cited rising raw materials costs, inflation and health care costs as top challenges in 2011, small and midsize buying consortium Prime Advantage reported.

Paccar Expects 2011 Truck Sales to Be Highest Since '06

Paccar Inc.'s (PCAR) first-quarter profit more than doubled, as the company predicted that 2011 will be the best year for commercial truck sales in five years.

The company, whose brands include Kenworth and Peterbilt trucks, raised its industry-wide sales forecast for the U.S. and Canada to between 200,000 and 220,000 heavy-duty trucks this year, up from 180,000 to 200,000 vehicles forecast in February. The revised outlook represents about a 65 percent increase from 2010's sales volume and would be the highest sales level since 2006.

Daimler Trucks North America LLC (DTNA) today will commemorate, with a "Switch On" ceremony, its Cleveland, N.C., Freightliner Truck Manufacturing Plant's status as a Duke Energy distributed generation, solar energy site.

Through a 25-year contract, DTNA is providing the land to support 1,560 solar panels, owned and operated by Duke Energy. This photovoltaic solar field project is projected to produce 359 kilowatts of renewable energy for Duke Energy customers - enough electricity to power approximately 38 average-sized homes.
