SSA Honors Cara Giebner at Annual Meeting

The Service Specialists Association has established the Cara Giebner SSA-GAAS Scholarship fund.

Giebner was the association's longtime executive director, who retired at the end of 2007. Liz Burleson-Barrett, outgoing Service Specialists Association President, made the announcement during the association's recent annual meeting in New Orleans.

China Publishes SAE (China) Standards for Commercial Vehicle Lube Oil

BEIJING - China has published technical standards for producing lubricant oil (lub oil) for commercial vehicles, which are expected to guide commercial vehicle producers and maintenance staff to select appropriate lubricant oil.

The standards, initiated by the Society of Automotive Engineers of China (SAE) and drafted by PetroChina's (SEHK:0857; SSE:601857) Kunlun Lubricant Oil Co., specify standards for engine-use lub oil, gearing system lube oil, lubricant grease, and specialist lube oils.

Scania and MAN Acknowledged they are in Merger Talks

Der Speigel reported last week that Volkswagen, which has a controlling stake in Scania and a minority holding in MAN, aims use the link to try to overtake global front-runners Daimler and Volvo.

Carrier Executives Predict Freight Capacity Will Tighten

Freight capacity in 2011, especially in trucking, will be constricted by a combination of federal legislative and regulatory policy and recession-related private-sector curbs on investment.

Safety, Fuel Top Concerns for Transportation CFOs

The uncertainty surrounding future fuel prices and the potential cost of new safety regulations top the list of concerns among transportation CFOs surveyed by finance giant GE Capital Americas.

When asked in GE Capital's most recent survey how concerned they were about the impact of regulations on their business, almost half (47 percent) of transportation CFOs indicated that they were most concerned about safety regulations, noted Dan Clark president and gm of GE Capital's transportation finance division - replacing environmental regulations as the top area of concern noted in the same survey conducted in January this year.

Environmentalists Seek Tougher Standards for HD, MD Truck Fuel Efficiency

Environmental groups said they back the Obama administration's push to set standards for heavy- and medium-duty truck fuel efficiency, and last week, they called for making the standards even tougher.

"The proposed rules represent a significant improvement and would put many of today's existing technologies to work across the truck fleet by the year 2018,"Don Anair, a vehicle analyst with the Union of Concerned Scientists, said at a hearing on the proposed rules in Chicago. "But even greater savings are possible than proposed."

Class 5-8 Orders Jump in October

Net orders of heavy-duty Class 8 commercial vehicles for North American markets in October rose 24 percent over September to 18,914 units, said ACT Research Co.

Medium-duty Classes 5-7 net orders increased 19 percent during the same period.

In release of its State of the Industry: Classes 5-8 Vehicles, ACT noted Class 8 net orders were the second highest monthly total since April 2008. Only October 2009 produced greater net orders, as some carriers sought to get the last of lower priced engines in advance of a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency emission mandate that raised the price of new heavy-duty vehicles by about $10,000.
