Accuride Announces $13 mil Aluminum Wheel Capacity Expansion

Accuride Corp. announced a $13 million aluminum wheel capacity expansion plan. The plan entails the addition of aluminum wheel machining and polishing equipment to be located in the company's facilities in Erie, Pa., and Monterrey, Mexico.

Fleet's CNG-Powered Freightliner Trucks at 130,000 Miles, $1 per Gallon Fuel Cost Savings

Portland, Ore. - Paper Transport, one of the nation's leading regional truckload service carriers, recently reached more than 130,000 miles each on its two Freightliner Business Class M2 112 Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) vehicles.

The Green Bay, Wisconsin based company has used the vehicles to haul freight between Green Bay and Chicago. Since taking possession of the CNG-powered trucks in winter 2010, Paper Transport has saved more than $1 per gallon in fuel costs.

Navistar Gets $253M Order for Military Wreckers

Warrenville, Ill. - Navistar Defense, LLC today announced that it received a delivery order for 250 International MaxxPro Recovery vehicles from the U.S. Marine Corps Systems Command. The $253 million order was placed under the company's Mine Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP) indefinite delivery / indefinite quantity contract and includes contractor logistics support. This is Navistar's eighth major MRAP variant.

Navistar originally unveiled the MaxxPro Recovery vehicle, also known as a wrecker variant, in February 2009 as a new utility vehicle offering.

E.U. Seeks Strategy to Reduce Reliance on China for Rare Earth Minerals

BERLIN - The European Commission intends to propose pursuing more bilateral trade agreements and investing in infrastructure in Africa as a means to increase alternative sources of rare earth metals, hoping to break China's dominance of the market for the strategic minerals.

The measures are outlined in a strategy paper for raw materials by the commissioner for industry and entrepreneurship, Antonio Tajani, a copy of which was seen Thursday by the International Herald Tribune.

Fuel Economy, Greenhouse Gas Emission Standards Proposed for Commercial Trucks

Two federal agencies have proposed first-ever national standards for fuel economy and greenhouse gas emissions for medium and heavy trucks. The complementary proposals, announced Monday by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and the Environmental Protection Agency, will establish a new way to measure truck fuel efficiency and emissions.

Instead of miles per gallon, trucks will be measured in terms of gallons per ton-mile. And emissions will be measured in terms of grams of carbon dioxide per ton-mile. The agencies adopted this approach in order to account for the work the truck is doing, rather than just the fuel efficiency of the engine.

Mack Trucks' Slagle to Appear on CBS's "Undercover Boss"TV Program

Denny Slagle, president and CEO of Mack Trucks Inc., is going to appear on a future episode of the CBS reality television series "Undercover Boss,"a show that takes corporate executives from their corner offices for an "undercover mission"to examine the inner workings of their companies. CBS said that while working alongside their employees for the show, company executives get to see the effects that their decisions have on others, where the problems lie within their organizations and get an up-close look at both the good and the bad while discovering the unsung heroes who make their companies run.

Commercial Trailer Orders Up 79 Percent Y/Y - a 33 Month High

New orders of dry van commercial trailers more than doubled in October from the prior year, leading total net orders of commercial trailers to a 33-month high, according to ACT Research. Eight of the nine trailer categories tracked by ACT posted year-over-year growth.

In the latest release of State of the Industry: U.S. Trailers; ACT noted that net orders of 17,126 were 79 percent higher than October of last year. The strong inflow of orders pushed manufacturer backlogs up by over 5,000 units.
