Eaton Reports Fourth Quarter Net Income of $1.25 Per Share

Company expects earnings to rebound in 2010.

CLEVELAND -- Diversified industrial manufacturer Eaton Corp. has announced net income per share of $1.25 for the fourth quarter of 2009, an increase of 28 percent over net income per share of 98 cents in the fourth quarter of 2008. Sales in the quarter were $3.1 billion, 10 percent below the same period in 2008. Net income was $211 million compared to $163 million in 2008, an increase of 29 percent.

Defiance Metal Products Acquires Medalist Laserfab, Inc

DEFIANCE, OHIO – Defiance Metal Products (DMP) announced today that it acquired Medalist Laserfab, Inc., a privately held metal fabrication operation based in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. Medalist will maintain its brand name and continue to manage business from its Oshkosh headquarters.

“This is a great strategic move for Medalist and DMP,” said Dennis Weaver, DMP’s chief executive officer.

Trailer Shipments Reach Lowest Since 1978

Despite the fact that December had the highest monthly total of trailer shipments for 2009, shipments for the full year were down 44 percent from 2008, according to ACT Research. Trailer factory shipments are at their lowest level since 1978

Power Train Service's Bass Named Truck Parts and Service Magazine’s 2009 Distributor of the Year

Lyle Bass of Power Train Service was named the 2009 Truck Parts & Service Distributor of the Year during the awards luncheon Thursday, Jan. 21, at Heavy Duty Aftermarket Week 2010 in Las Vegas, Nev.

Headquartered in Indianapolis, the nine-location company is owned by Bass and business partner Joe Leffel. It was selected through votes cast by aftermarket representatives from peer distributors, suppliers and industry organizations. Leffel was present to accept the award.

Oshkosh Corporation Receives Orders Valued at $325 Million for M-ATV Parts, Repair Kits

OSHKOSH, Wis., Jan 25, 2010 -- Oshkosh Corporation (NYSE:OSK) today announced its Defense division received two delivery orders valued at more than $325 million from the U.S. Army Tank- automotive and Armaments Command Life Cycle Management Command (TACOM LCMC) to supply spare parts and repair kits for the MRAP All-Terrain Vehicle (M-ATV).

EPA Revises SCR Guidance for ’10 Engines

In a move designed to bolster its defense in a federal lawsuit filed by truck manufacturer Navistar Inc., the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has revised its 2010 engine selective catalytic reduction guidance to remove a specific requirement limiting the hours and miles a truck can operate after its urea tank runs dry.

Class 8 Truck Sales Rise in December to Lowest Annual Total Since 1983

U.S. heavy-duty truck sales in December topped 10,000 units for the only month in 2009, but the grand total for the year of 94,798 units was the lowest since 1983 and 29 percent below the 2008 level, WardsAuto.com reported.

“Everywhere we wanted to look, things were worse in 2009 than 2008,” Kenny Vieth, partner and senior analyst at another firm that analyzes truck data, ACT Research Co., told Transport Topics. He said that “2009 made an already long downturn even longer.”

Truck-Involved Fatality Rate Falls 12.3 Percent to Record Low

The rate of fatalities in accidents involving trucks fell 12.3 percent in 2008 from the previous year — the largest year-to-year drop on record — to its lowest level on record, according to an American Trucking Associations analysis of Department of Transportation data.

ATA reported last week that the rate at which people were killed in truck-involved crashes fell to 1.86 per 100 million miles traveled during 2008, the lowest since the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and Federal Highway Administration began compiling data in 1975. In 2007, the fatality rate was 2.12 per 100 million miles traveled.

Detroit Diesel Engines Certified By EPA

Detroit Diesel Corp. has announced that its DD13, DD15 and DD16 diesel engines have been formally certified by the EPA as meeting 2010 emissions regulations.

The engines use Detroit Diesel’s BlueTec emissions control system, developed to meet the new regulations through selective catalytic reduction (SCR). The system helps improve engine efficiency, delivering fuel economy improvement up to 5 percent over 2007 engines, the engine maker said.
