The CVSN Pinewood Challenge will be part of an all-industry reception held during HDAW on 6:30 p.m. – 8 p.m., Wednesday, Jan. 20, 2010, in the Mirage Event Center.

Environment: US: The Hidden Costs of Energy Use

According to the report " Hidden Costs of Energy: Unpriced Consequences of Energy Production and Use", by the US National Research Council (NRC), electric cars offer few, if any, overall savings compared with oil-powered vehicles.

The report puts figures on the non-climate related costs of US energy production from a range of pollutants.

Railroad Scoring Carbon vs Trucking Calculations

Norfolk Southern Corp. recently announced it has enhanced its online Green Machine carbon footprint “analyzer,” which lets shippers calculate the environmental impacts of moving freight by rail or truck.

The analyzer now features a carbon offset calculator to compute the estimated monetary value of reducing carbon emissions by switching freight from truck to rail.

Shippers can enter a move’s freight tonnage and length of haul and the calculator will determine the value based on carbon offsets’ current market price.

BAE-Navistar Team Completes Design Review For Tactical Vehicles

BAE Systems and Navistar Defense have completed its critical design review (CDR) for the U.S. multi-service Joint Light Tactical Vehicle program. The CDR was part of BAE System's 27-month contract to develop JLTV technology.

With the completion of the CDR, the companies can begin vehicle integration, assembly, test and checkout (IAT&C) activities to deliver test vehicles to the government by May 2010.

Polk & Co: Total Class 8 Fleet Dips in 3Q Used Registrations Rise

The heavy-duty U.S. truck fleet contracted slightly in the third quarter, shrinking back to its size in the first quarter of 2009, but used-truck sales volumes strengthened in the quarter, according to a Nov. 17 report by R.L. Polk.

The total U.S. Class 8 fleet closed the third quarter at 3.63 million units, down from 3.64 million vehicles on June 30, and 3.65 million at the end of 2008, according to Polk & Co., which is based in Southfield, Mich. The decline between the second and third quarters equaled 0.2 percent.

October Truck Tonnage Falls 5.2 Percent; Decline Is Best Showing in a Year

U.S. truck tonnage fell 5.2 percent in October, yet posted the best year-over-year performance since November of last year, as analysts said signs of a lasting economic recovery were uneven.

The October slip to 103.6 in American Trucking Associations’ seasonally adjusted index was an improvement over the 7.3 percent year-over-year decline in September, but total tonnage still fell for the 13th straight month. Tonnage dipped 0.2 percent from September to October, and 0.3 percent from August to September.

Green Truck Summit Features Sessions on Clean Technology

Jack Roush, chairman of Roush Enterprises and chief executive officer and co-owner of NASCAR team Roush Fenway Racing, will be one of the keynote speakers at the Green Truck Summit 2010 on March 9-10, the National Truck Equipment Association (NTEA) and CALSTART announced. Roush’s address with Roy Willis, president and CEO of the Propane Education and Research Council, will be one of 25 sessions on clean technologies and alternative fuels for work trucks presented at the summit.

New Coalition's Vehicle Electrification Agenda Could Spark State Backlash

A major new trade group's vehicle electrification legislative agenda could trigger push back from state public utility commissions because the group is lobbying for Congress to establish an irreversible electricity rate base requirement that would fund grid upgrades to enable plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) and battery electric vehicles (BEVs) to be quickly integrated into the system, according to a state source and the group's own report.

Fuel Economy Boosts Buyer Satisfaction With '07 Medium-Duty Engines

The fuel economy of 2007 model-year medium-duty truck engines has driven up owner satisfaction compared with that of the 2006 model-year, according to the J.D. Power and Associates 2009 Medium-Duty Truck Engine and Transmission Customer Satisfaction Study.

According to the recent study, 2007 model-year engines on medium-duty trucks has higher fuel economy than the 2006 models, with Class 6 trucks averaging 9.4 miles per gallon, versus 8.8 miles per gallon last year. While Class 5 and 7 saw less fuel economy gains, on average, fuel economy was improved by five of the seven medium-duty engine manufacturers from 2008.

Giant Eagle Supermarket’s Talon Logistics Gets First EPA’10 Volvo

The first EPA2010-certified truck from the Volvo Trucks North America production line has been delivered to Talon Logistics. The Volvo VN Daycab tractor is powered by a Volvo D13 diesel using selective catalytic reduction (SCR) to meet the new Federal emissions requirements that take effect in January.

Longbow Research: “YRCW Finds More Coins Under the Couch”

The country’s largest LTL carrier, YRC Worldwide Inc. (YRCVW) will sell its dedicated contract carriage business to Greatwide Logistics Services as it continues attempts to restructure operations and avoid bankruptcy. With the sale raising an estimated value of $34 million, “we believe that the prospects for YRCW continuing as a going concern are improved, and that it can go forward as a much smaller and leaner entity,” said Lee A. Klaskow, the senior transportation and logistics analyst at Longbow Research.
