LAS VEGAS. As the first step in a slow ramp-up to full production, International Truck and Engine Corp. says it is beginning to take orders for heavy-duty trucks powered by its new proprietary MaxxForce 11- and 13-liter diesel engines. Under a joint development agreement announced in 2005, the new engine family is based on an MAN diesel and reengineered with all new fuel and air systems to meet U.S. emissions requirements.
The first engines have already been built in MAN’s Nuremberg, Germany plant and shipped to International’s Huntsville, AL, engine plant for some final assembly work, according to Thomas D. Baughman, vp & gm of the company’s Heavy Vehicle Center.
The American Trucking Associations’ advanced seasonally adjusted For-Hire Truck Tonnage Index jumped 4.1 percent in December 2007, after rising 0.9 percent in November. The latest increase was the largest month-to-month gain since a 6.2 percent jump in December 2006. The not-seasonally adjusted index fell 8.2 percent from November to 102.7.
On a seasonally adjusted basis, the tonnage index jumped to 116.7 in December, its highest level since January 2006. Tonnage also was up 1.4 percent from a year earlier, marking the first sequential year-over-year increases since May and June 2006. Despite these increases, however, the annual tonnage index declined 1.4 percent in 2007, following a 1.7 percent drop in 2006.
During his first address as chairman of the Heavy Duty Manufacturers Association (HDMA) board of directors, Joe McAleese, president and CEO of Bendix Commercial Vehicle Systems, encouraged members to be in a position to adapt, achieve and grow as the trucking industry enters what he expects to be a period of long-term growth.
McAleese was installed as the organization's 2008 chair during this week's Heavy Duty Dialogue in Las Vegas. McAleese urged his fellow members to prepare for the future by planning for sustainable growth, recognizing the emergence of the global economy, and ensuring safety through means such as new technology and anti-counterfeiting measures.
